The last week while attempting to find ways to show Christian courage I chose to do it at work. Work is the place where I spend most of my time when I am not at home. The easy thing to do would have been to choose my home and my family to attempt to show courage, but I decided that I wanted to find someone else that I may not have much contact in the real world (that is outside work)
Due to the fact that this is a public blog I will not disclose the persons name. I will refer to him as "Martin". Martin works with me and for the last past weeks we get to sit close to one another and comment on many things about work and life in general. We have never engaged in very deep or meaningful converstations as we work together and talk of religion or ideals may become offensive to others. That is what we call an HR issue. Meaning that Human Resources may step in and you could lose your job.
I decided to find a way to be Christ like with him and make a difference to his life. I started by making cookies and bringing them to work to share. I found ways to spend lunch together in the break room and just chatting. After a couple of days we had conversations that were more meaningful. I knew about his family and also about his situation. Martin is a less active returned missionary. He drinks and smokes and no longer attends church and obviously the temple. I did not know any of this things!
Martin told me that he new I was a "good mormon boy". He said that he had been watching me since I started working there. He was surprised that I did not engaged in rude conversations about others, or gossip and complaint about work policy.
Martin is a father of a beautiful young girl and married. He told me that he wants to return to church and attend the temple once again. He just does not know how.
I am not sure what will become of Martin. I do know that he desires good things for him and his family. I have always known that being a good example is very important, but could have never known that Martin was watching me to see what I would do.
